The Startalling Reveal within the Book of Revelation!
Meet The Beast
“What, Not who, is the Beast of Hazon/Revelation?”
In Gnostic wisdom, the Beast of Revelation is not primarily a future individual Antichrist or a single end-time empire, but a symbolic embodiment of the archonic powers and the Demiurge’s dominion over the material cosmos, the system of ignorance, false authority, and material entanglement which repeatedly traps the divine spark.
Gnostic cosmologies (especially Sethian texts from the Nag Hammadi library) portray the rulers of this world in explicitly bestial terms. The Demiurge, known as Yaldabaoth, Saklas (“fool”), or Samael (“god of the blind”), emerges as an aborted, arrogant being from Sophia’s flawed creative act. In the Apocryphon of John and the Hypostasis of the Archons (Reality of the Rulers), he is described as lion-faced or a hybrid “arrogant beast resembling a lion,” androgynous, formed from shadow and matter. He proclaims, “I am God and there is no other,” in ignorance of the true transcendent Source (the Monad, the unknowable Spirit and the Pleroma which radiates from The Father (Monad).
His archons (authorities) are often theriomorphic ( having an animal form: "gods depicted in theriomorphic form" "a theriomorphic vehicle"), animal-headed or multi-faced beings (lion, serpent, dragon, donkey, etc.). They model humanity from earth after their own imperfect image, implant counterfeit spirits, and bind souls through fate, passion, and material desire. The body itself can be called a “beast” that the descending Savior must temporarily put on (Paraphrase of Shem). In some texts the instructive serpent is also named “Beast,” but here the figure is often positive—revealing knowledge that liberates rather than enslaves.
This imagery draws on Jewish apocalyptic beasts (Daniel, etc.) and Platonic/ demiurgic ideas, but inverts them: the “creator” and his minions are not ultimate divine powers but deficient, power-hungry phantoms of the Fall.
Reinterpreting Revelation’s Beast
Although the Book of Revelation is not itself a Gnostic composition (Gnostics produced their own apocalypses such as the Apocryphon of John, Revelation of Adam, or Apocalypse of Peter), Gnostic-oriented readers have long applied their framework to the symbolism within. The Beast rising from the sea (Rev 13), empowered by the Dragon (Satan (the Advisory) the hostile cosmic order), given authority over every tribe and nation, demanding worship, and controlling commerce via its mark, maps readily onto the archonic system:
It represents the collective rule of the archons and the Demiurge, the “authorities of the universe and the spirits of wickedness” against which the true contest is fought (Hypostasis of the Archons, echoing Ephesians). Hold power and influence merely within the density of their material realm.
Its seven heads and ten horns evoke the planetary spheres or the incomplete, multiplicitous powers of the lower cosmos (contrasted with the perfect Ogdoad or Pleroma above).
The demand that “no one can buy or sell” without the mark is the economic and social enforcement of material allegiance, participation in the Demiurge’s order of accumulation, status, and false security of the material realm which can only bring willful blindness to the awakening truth.
The “number of a man… 666; 600, 3 score and 6 marks the pinnacle of human wisdom, wealth, and power which is always followed by spiritual downfall, exploitation of G-d’s people and false worship (BAAL, MOLECH).” In a brash awakening this also underscores human (or demiurgic) limitation and self-exaltation. In some modern Gnostic readings it points to the lower mind (phren), dualistic solar consciousness under the Demiurge, or the chief of the archons themselves. It can also echo the scriptural 666 talents of gold that marked Solomon’s peak of worldly glory just before spiritual collapse, the pattern of dazzling human achievement turning into idolatry and exploitation.
The second beast (from the earth, the false prophet) that performs signs and enforces the mark then becomes the propaganda or religious apparatus that legitimizes the first: the imitation of the true Christ or true revelation that keeps souls oriented toward the material rather than the inner light.
Some fringe or symbolic readings have even linked the number and the Ogdoad (the eighth realm associated with Sophia/Wisdom) in complex ways, though these remain speculative and secondary to the core archonic identification.
The Path of the Way of Yehoshua (Jesus): The Path of Gnosis
What overcomes the Beast is not political resistance or apocalyptic waiting, but gnosis—direct knowledge of one’s origin in the Pleroma and the recognition that the archons have no ultimate power over the root of truth. The Savior (Christ, Seth, or the descending Pronoia/Barbelo) reveals the true Father, strips away the counterfeit spirit, and enables the soul to ascend past the planetary rulers. The “mark” is refused inwardly when one ceases to worship the visible powers and remembers the invisible Source.
Thus the Gnostic reading transforms Revelation’s terrifying imagery into a diagnostic map of the human condition under the archons and an invitation to liberation. The Beast is real, recurrent, and systemic… but it is not ultimate. The light that was never created by it cannot finally be held by it.
