The Mirror of the Joyful Heart: On True Adherence to the Way of Jesus: or “The Man in the Mirror”

A reflection by Pastor Mark.

Six people sharing golden light from their hearts in a sunlit temple, with the Forgiven Temple Ministries seal and a scroll

Beloved seekers upon the Path, hear this with the ear of the inward ear, for the Way of Jesus is not a road paved with the stones of outward show, but a living current that flows only where the heart has become transparent to Love itself. Many walk in the shadow of projected piety, the carefully arranged garments of devotion, the measured words of orthodoxy, and the public postures of the righteous. These are but reflections cast upon the waters of the world, images we fashion so that others (and we ourselves) may see what we wish to be seen. Yet such projections dissolve when the light shifts, for they have no root in the Living One. True faithful devotion and adherence to the Path are found not there, but in our becoming the very reflection of the loving joy and gratitude that streamed from the teachings of the Master.

Jesus did not come to establish a theater of the holy. In the secret words preserved among those who knew him, he spoke of the kingdom as already within, of the light that has never been extinguished in the depths of the soul. He taught that the Father is not remote, but the source of an unceasing gratitude that wells up as joy when the soul remembers its origin. This joy is not the thin cheer of circumstance, nor the gratitude of the one who has received a favor; it is the spontaneous radiance of the divine spark recognizing itself. When we cease projecting the image of the pious and instead allow that spark to shine unhindered, we become living mirrors of what Jesus revealed: the Love that does not cling, the joy which does not depend, the gratitude that arises simply because Being itself is gift.

Projected piety seeks to lift the self by contrast, by appearing holier, more certain, more separate from the common lot. It is a labor of the mind that fashions a mask and then forgets it is a mask. But the reflection of Jesus’ teachings works otherwise. As we enter the loving joy he embodied, we are lifted from within, not by effort or display, but by the simple recognition that we already participate in what he shared. And because that Love is not a private possession, the same movement lifts others. When the mirror of one heart is cleared, those who draw near find themselves reflected in its light; the spark in them is kindled by the spark in us. This is the mystery of “Sharing in the Love”: it is never solitary. To be lifted is to become the means by which another is lifted, for the Love which Jesus taught is the very substance of the Pleroma, the fullness in which all are already held.

Consider the way of the Master. He did not demand that his followers construct an edifice of correct belief or accumulate merits of visible virtue. He pointed again and again to the living relationship, love one another as I have loved you; become as little children who receive without calculation; rejoice that your names are written in the heavens of the heart. In such teaching there is no room for the projected self. There is only the open vessel into which the joy of the Father pours, and from which it overflows. Those who truly walk the Way discover that adherence is not a clinging to forms, but a continual yielding to this overflow. Gratitude becomes the natural posture of the soul that has tasted the sweetness of its own origin; joy becomes the quiet fire that warms both the one who bears it and all who come within its reach.

Therefore, let us put aside the labor of projection. The world is already full of mirrors which show only what we place before them. Let us instead become the clear reflection of what Jesus was and is: the loving joy that knows no boundary, the gratitude that gives without measure. In this, we lift ourselves, not by ascending some ladder of merit, but by remembering the height from which we have never truly fallen. And in the same remembrance we lift others, for when Love is shared it multiplies without diminishing. The Path of the Way is walked most faithfully when we cease striving to appear upon it and simply allow ourselves to be the place where the teachings of the Master become flesh and light once more.

Beloved ones, let us linger now in the quiet of this knowing, not to add more words as ornament, but to allow the light already present to open further. The projected piety we have named is more than a simple outward mask; it is a careful arrangement of the soul’s own longing, turned outward so that it may be seen and approved by the eyes of the world. In such projection the heart studies itself as an object to be perfected, and in the studying it forgets that it was never meant to be an object at all. It becomes busy with the shapes of holiness, measured speech, chosen postures, the careful display of gratitude or joy that has first been filtered through the desire to appear as one who possesses them. Yet what is thus projected cannot nourish, for it has already been separated from its source. It is a light that has been reflected once too often, until only a pale image remains, and the one who carries it grows weary beneath its weight.

True reflection is of another order. When the soul ceases to arrange itself for viewing, a simpler movement occurs: the loving joy that Jesus embodied begins to shine through without obstruction. This joy is not an emotion stirred by circumstance, nor a gratitude counted as possession. It is the quiet, continuous recognition that the spark within has never left the Father’s heart. In the teachings of the Master we hear this again and again, not as a demand that we manufacture feeling, but as an invitation to remember what already is. “The kingdom of heaven is within you,” he said; “Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” These are not rewards offered to the pious. They are descriptions of the soul’s native condition once the veil of projected effort is allowed to fall. The gratitude that arises then is the soul’s own answering yes to its origin, and the joy is the warmth of that yes as it spreads through every part of the being.

In this becoming, something more intimate than self-improvement takes place. We do not lift ourselves by climbing toward a distant ideal. Rather, the recognition of the spark within us is itself the lifting. As the mirror clears, we discover that we have been held all along in the fullness of Love; the sense of separation was only the cloud of our own projected striving. And because this Love is not a private light, the clearing of one mirror becomes an invitation to every other. When another draws near and finds themselves reflected in the unforced joy of a heart that has remembered, the spark in them begins to stir of its own accord. No teaching is required, no persuasion offered. The Love simply recognizes itself, and in that recognition both are raised, not above one another, but into the shared height from which neither had ever truly fallen.

This is the secret economy of Sharing in the Love. It is not that one gives and another receives, as if Love were a substance that could be depleted. It is that the same Life that shines in the clear heart is already shining, though still veiled, in the heart that has not yet remembered. When the veil thins in one place, the light that is everywhere becomes more visible everywhere. Jesus lived this without remainder. He did not stand apart as the sole bearer of the Father’s joy; he became the place where that joy could be recognized by all who had eyes to see. In his presence the projected self grew transparent, and ordinary men and women found themselves lifted into a gratitude they had not known they possessed. The same movement continues wherever a heart consents to be a true reflection rather than a projector of piety.

Therefore we are invited, again and again, into a gentler practice than the world of appearances can comprehend. We need not labor to become more loving, more joyful, more grateful. We need only cease arranging the image we wish others to see, and allow the loving joy that Jesus revealed to shine through the simplicity of our ordinary presence. In that allowing, we are lifted, quietly, without announcement. And those who walk beside us are lifted also, not by our words or our visible virtues, but by the silent recognition that the same Love that has remembered itself in us has never ceased to dwell in them. The Path of the Way is nothing other than this mutual remembering. It is walked most faithfully when we become, together, the clear and living reflection of the joy that needs no projection, the gratitude that needs no audience, and the Love that multiplies simply by being shared.

May we rest, then, in this deeper seeing. The light is already here. The mirror need only be left clear.

Walk, then, not as those who display the Path, but as those in whom the Path is seen. Be the reflection. Share the Love. In that sharing the kingdom is already present, and the joy of the Father is made complete among us.

Amen, and May the light within you know itself,

Pastor Mark
