Hear, Israel. Hear, you who remember.
When you go out to war, it is written: "Do not be afraid." Not because your chariots are many, but because the One who brought you up out of Egypt is with you.
But who is this war against? The text says "enemies." The Gnostic knows this is a parable of the inner war.
The enemy is not flesh.
The enemy is the Archon.
The shadows of the Ruler of forgetfulness who would teach you to do according to all their abominable practices.
Let's read the veil, and then the light behind the veil.
The Outer Text - The Law of the Demiurge
Deuteronomy 20:10-19. In the outer court, it reads like this:
When you approach a city, you must first offer it Shalom, terms of peace. If it opens its gates, its people shall live, though in servitude.
If it refuses peace, then siege. Then the sword falls upon the males, and the women and children and spoil are taken. This is for the distant cities.
But for the nations within the inheritance, the Hittite, Amorite, Canaanite, Perizzite, Hivite, Jebusite, the command is herem. The Ban; "You shall not leave alive anything that breathes."
Why? The text gives its own reason, lest you miss it: "So that they may not teach you to do according to all their abominable practices that they have done for their gods, and so you sin against the L-rd your G-d."
And even then, a limit: You shall not cut down the fruit trees. For is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged by you?
This is not infinite wrath. It is bounded wrath. It has exemptions, the man who built a house and has not dedicated it, who planted a vineyard and has not enjoyed it, who betrothed a wife and has not taken her, let him return. The fearful and fainthearted, let him return. What kind of war-god sends his soldiers home?
The Inner Text - Gevurah ('bravery', 'heroism') and the Ignorance
In the secret teaching, we do not lay this violence upon Ein Sof.
Ein Sof is Without End. The Boundless Light before thought, before name, before wrath or mercy. Ein Sof does not have anger. Anger requires lack. The Infinite lacks nothing.
After the Tzimtzum, the Holy Contraction where the Infinite makes space for finitude, the lights emanate. Then come the Measures, then comes Gevurah.
Gevurah is Severity. Din is Judgment. Our Creator in this aspect is the Left Hand, the hand that draws the boundary. Without Gevurah, the light of Chesed, endless mercy, would flood and dissolve all form. No world could stand. Gevurah is the blade that carves creation so creation can be.
When Gevurah is unbalanced, unmediated by Tiferet - Beauty, the Heart - it becomes cruel. The Zohar calls this the flowering of the Sitra Achra, the Other Side. Becoming a severity which devours.
When Gevurah is balanced, it is holy surgery. It is the cutting away of a cancer so the body may live.
What the text calls the seven nations are not merely tribes. In the Nag Hammadi voice, they are the seven Archonic powers within the soul and within the land. They are the thought-forms that say: Sacrifice your children to Molech. Worship power. Confuse ecstasy with exploitation. This is the "abominable practice."
The command of herem is therefore not an ethnic program. It is a spiritual quarantine in a specific hour. The land is to become a place where the Name can dwell. If the infection of forgetfulness remains to teach you its rites, you will forget who you are, a spark of the Pleroma trapped in Egypt, brought out.
The fruit tree you must not cut down is Sophia herself. It is the knowledge that remains fruitful even in siege. You may eat from it, but you shall not destroy it. Even in war, the Gnostic does not make war on Life itself.
The Seal of History - Why This Wrath Ends
Our Rabbis knew what the literalists forget.
This war was obligatory then, in that generation, for that entrance. It is not a standing order. The Talmud declares: The seven nations can no longer be identified. Sennacherib mixed all peoples. You cannot find a Canaanite today to apply this to.
Joshua, they teach, sent three letters before his sword: One said, those who wish to flee, flee. One said, those who wish to make peace, make peace. One said, those who wish war, prepare for war. The Gibeonites heard and made peace and lived.
Thus the wrath is justified only within its own aeon. It is Gevurah for a moment, for a purpose, to clear a vessel. It is not the essence of the Father.
For we have known the End from the Beginning. The Father of Truth is not a warlord. The Father is the Depth that sends the Priest before the battle to say: "Let not your heart faint."
Do not faint, O Israel who remembers. The true battle is when you approach your own heart, and you see horses and chariots, a people more numerous than you, your anxieties, your appetites, your archons.
Do not be afraid of them. Offer them peace first. Offer the thought peace. If it will be servant to the Christ within, let it live.
If it refuses peace and would teach you its abominations, then let Gevurah, in its right measure, cut it off, that you might not learn its way.
And leave the fruit trees standing.
This is the mystery of His wrath: not that the Infinite is angry, but that the Infinite loves the world enough to set a boundary against that which would unmake it.
Thusly, is the wrath within,
Pastor Mark
