Gnosis against the Veil of Suicidal Empathy

A reflection on empathy, discernment, and the call to see clearly.

Victimhood in America artwork

Norm Macdonald captured the inversion in a 2016 tweet that has only grown sharper: “What terrifies me is if ISIS were to detonate a nuclear device and kill 50 million Americans. Imagine the backlash against peaceful Muslims?” The line is deadpan satire, not policy advice. It isolates a reflex in which the imagined secondary injury, hurt feelings, expanded “Islamophobia,” outranks the primary fact of mass death. That reflex is what some observers now call suicidal empathy: compassion extended so indiscriminately, and so asymmetrically, that it discounts evidence of incompatible aims.

The etymology does not do the work sometimes claimed for it. “Islam” derives from the Arabic root for submission or surrender to G-d, linked to the same cluster as salaam (peace/safety). It is said in a great many theological circles translate Islam as “conquest.” What the historical record and core texts do show is a politically charged Theology system whose entire expansion history has been military. Within a century of Muhammad’s death, Arab armies had taken the Levant, Egypt, North Africa, Persia, and parts of Iberia and Central Asia. Islam jurisprudence “distinguishes” the abode of Islam from the abode of war and the doctrine of jihad; understood by major schools as including armed struggle in offensive expansion while claiming they are “defending” Islamic Theologically based rule, their supplied the framework.

Conquered peoples were often offered forced conversion, the subordinate dhimmi status (taxes and tremendous restrictions) which yet left you very vulnerable, or death. That pattern is uniquely distinctive in remaining remarkably in brutal, barbaric and tyrannical doctrine substantially inside the tradition today.

Claiming ‘Denominations of Islam’

The so called Orthodox (Radical) “Islamic” sources claim to contain both conciliatory passages and explicit commands regarding unbelievers, apostates, as well as the supremacy of Islamic law.

“Reformist” or quietist readings exist and are followed by many individuals. They have not displaced the supremacist strands in key institutions, state codes, or polling. Pew Research surveys across multiple Muslim-majority countries have repeatedly found majorities or large pluralities favoring Sharia as official law, including hudud punishments, and unfavorable views of leaving the faith.

Apostasy (as are many other perceived slants to the rule of Islam), remain as a capital offense under classical rulings and in several contemporary legal systems. Terrorism databases (Global Terrorism Index and related trackers) show that, in recent decades, the large majority of fatalities from religiously motivated attacks have been claimed by groups citing Islamic justification. These are empirical distributions, not evidence that every Muslim endorses them.

Suicidal empathy appears where Western institutions treat the above as unmentionable while amplifying the backlash narrative. After mass-casualty attacks, official and media language often pivots within hours to fears of discrimination against Muslims, sometimes before victims are fully counted. European data on parallel societies, grooming-gang scandals concentrated in specific communities, elevated rates of certain violent crimes correlated with origin countries, and honor-based violence are frequently subordinated to the charge of phobia with a manufactured word. Integration metrics, support for free speech, gender equality, secular law. All show persistent gaps in second-generation polling in several countries. Open-border or high-volume migration policies that ignore these selections are effects defended by evidence of refusal for assimilation as well as Islam moral prohibitions forcing changes in western Societies.

The “unaware” position is not by any means a neutral ignorance; it is actively maintained. Curricula and prestige outlets frequently present Islam principally as a fellow Abrahamic “peaceful” faith victimized by Western power, while soft-pedaling the clear and unending conquest history, scriptural martial passages, and contemporary governance outcomes under Islamic law. The result is a knowledge deficit: citizens who can recite the dangers of generic “extremism” though cannot state what the median respondent in multiple national surveys actually prefers on blasphemy, homosexuality, or the status of non-Muslims.

Gnostic language is useful here metaphorically for unmediated recognition. The veil is the moralized refusal to rank threats by body count and stated intention. Piercing it requires no esoteric initiation, only primary texts, casualty figures, and survey instruments read without the prior commitment that criticism itself constitutes the greater harm.

Empathy for individuals is compatible with pattern recognition. Conflating the two, so that any doctrinal or demographic observation is pre-labeled phobia, reproduces the Macdonald scenario in slower motion: the civilizational downside is registered last, if at all. Rational assessment starts from the record of expansion, the content of authoritative sources, and the measurable attitudes of populations, not from the hope that naming those facts will be the real catastrophe.
